Preparation and Practices

The choice of plant material and site preparation methods can greatly influence restoration success. In active restoration, where planting or seeding is used, site preparation may include weed control, soil amendments, or surface treatments to improve establishment. Even in passive restoration, where natural regeneration is encouraged, removing key stressors can enhance recovery. Tailoring these approaches to site conditions helps maximize restoration outcomes.

Preparation for Ecological Restoration

Preparing a site for planting or seeding can significantly affect restoration outcomes. There are several ways that sites can be prepared for plant material installation.

Procuring Plant Material

Once you have determined which species you will use for your restoration project, you must then acquire the plant or seed materials. This can be one of the hardest and most expensive parts of the entire restoration procedure.

Plant Material Application

There are multiple methods for introducing native plants to a restoration site. Common approaches include direct seeding, using container-grown plants, plugs, or cuttings. The best method will depend on site conditions, the ecosystem type, project goals, and available funding.
